Use Accurate Bathroom Scales on
the Road to a Healthy Lifestyle
Many of us are now looking to using
weighing scales at home as we manage our
lifestyles and strive for a healthy weight. But
you have to make sure you use scales that will
provide an accurate assessment of your weight
-- and get it right first time, every time. So:
How can you ensure
your bathroom scales are
accurate?
In the marketplace there are broadly
speaking two types of bathroom scale: digital scales
and mechanical scales (this latter type is
also known as also known as analog). Most
people agree that the most accurate are
electronic digital scales. This is because
mechanical scales use moving parts and
usually a spring, and gradually these are
stretched and deformed over time with
regular use, so they eventually begin to
wear out -- and that's when they start
displaying inaccurate values for your body
weight.
On the other hand, digital scales are
usually electrical with no moving parts. This
means they do not suffer from a gradual
worsening of its accuracy and the indications
of weight it displays.
Not only that, but digital scales are
normally easier to read than mechanical ones --
you don't have to peer carefully at a needle
between two thin black lines to figure out what
your weight is, you just have to look at the
numbers displayed on the scales! Oftentimes the
display is illuminated to help readability, and
on some digital scales you will find your
weight displayed in a reading at waist height,
meaning there is bother with bending down to
find out your weight if your eyesight is not as
good as it was!
For those folks who are increasingly
conscious about their health in general, some
bathroom scales can now provide an analysis of
your percentage of body fat. It
measures this using very small electric
currents (don't worry -- the currents are so
tiny you don't even feel them) that are
passed up one leg and then down the other.
You can tell the scales what your height is
and it can calculate your Body Mass Index
(BMI), a particular statistic
that is used in reports from your
doctor.
There is an important point to be made about
accuracy: you can use the most accurate scales
in the world, but if you don't use them
properly then it is pointless. For example,
most scales only work properly if used on a
flat, solid, level surface. Also, for
consistency, you should weight yourself at the
same time of day and in the same condition (for
example first thing in the morning after going
to the bathroom but before breakfast, and
wearing minimal clothing).
So you should use
accurate bathroom scales, and make sure you
use them properly -- that way you'll be well
down the road to winning your battle with your weight!
